Exceptional views of Kamnik-Savinja Alps and rich tradition make Velika planina the most beautiful alpine pasture in Slovenia. You can reach the top of the alp either by cable car and chair-lift, or hike along the well-marked hiking trails.
Explore the unique herdsmen settlement, visit the Preskar Museum Hut, chat with the herdsmen and ask them how they have lived on the mountain for centuries. Ask them to reveal you the story of Trnič Cheese. Ask them why it is called the cheese of love. Afterwards, taste traditional mountain specialties at one of the mountain lodges.
Return to the valley and discover the natural sights created by alpine Kamniška Bistrica River. Take a look at its spring and the gorges of Veliki and Mali Predaselj, where the river makes its deepest cut into the riverbed.
Treat yourself to a fine selection of Kamnik dishes at one of the typical local restaurants and Taste Kamnik, selected local dishes boasting tradition and many unforgettable stories. Spend an afternoon discovering the cultural heritage of the vivid medieval town. Climb up to the Mali grad Hill and admire the panoramic view of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Ask about the legend of Countess Veronika, get to know Šutna Street, Zaprice Castle Museum and the Birthplace of General Rudolf Maister.
Wrap up the visit to Kamnik by tasting a typical dessert at one of the restaurants or cafes in the centre and do not forget to stop by at the Kamnik Tourist Information Centre to buy a souvenir or two. It can also be Trnič, the cheese of love.
